Tax Board suspends California Renewal

California Renewal, the sole sponsor of one of the ballot measure committees working to block gay marriage through a constitutional amendment, was suspended by the state Franchise Tax Board in March.

That means that California Renewal can't legally conduct business in California or use the organization's name. The California Political Reform Act doesn't say what should happen when a ballot measure committee sponsor is suspended by the tax board.

Since the suspension, the committee (officially known as Protectmarriage.com, a project of California Renewal) has raised just over $350,000, according to its most recently filed campaign finance disclosure reports. They spent significant amounts on "petition circulating" in the same time period. In total, the committee, led by Ron Prentice (executive director of both California Renewal and the California Family Council Foundation) has reported raising about $1.4 million.
